The next Board Spotlight is Cathy VonRueden!

Name: Cathy VonRueden

Occupation: UCare, Vice President Provider Relations and Contracting

How long have you been on the board for MNCHWA?

3 years

What do you enjoy about being on the board?

Helping a dedicated organization fulfill its Mission of better community health through CHWs.

Why do you believe CHWs are integral to health equity?

CHWs have a cultural understanding and often are rooted in the diverse communities of the populations they serve.  In many settings they bridge the gap between the traditional, disparate healthcare system and the social and ethnic needs of their patients.

What are your hopes for the Alliance or CHW field in the next few years?

To expand the outreach and participation in the work of the Alliance.  To continue to advance the importance, educational opportunities and use of CHWs across settings within healthcare and social services.

Thank you Cathy for your perspective and passion for CHW growth!

Meet the Board: Laura Guzman-Corrales, Vice Chair

The next board member spotlight is Laura Guzman-Corrales, Vice Chair!

Name: Laura Guzman-Corrales

Occupation: Preschool Development Grant Lead at Minnesota Department of Health

How long have you been on the board for MNCHWA?

3 1/2 years!

What do you enjoy about being on the board?

I enjoy advocating for the CHW profession and finding ways to elevate the role in as many sectors as possible. I also really enjoy meeting and learning from CHWs.

Why do you believe CHWs are integral to health equity?

CHWs are the only professionals in our people-serving systems whose primary role is to act as the bridge between the service provider and the community. Their role is to understand the social needs of individuals and families and ensure those needs are met in a person-centered, culturally relevant way. In ideal situations, they also have shared lived experiences and backgrounds with the communities they serve which makes them better equipped to understand the challenges, assets, and aspirations communities have.

What are your hopes for the Alliance or CHW field in the next few years?

I hope for greater deployment of CHWs across our people serving systems, more sustainable reimbursement models for CHWs in all settings, and continued professionalization of the field without closing the doors to individuals who have what it takes to be great CHWs.

Thank you Laura for your compassion and desire to grow CHWs to be more!

Cathy Weik Profile

Meet the Board: Cathy Weik, Board Chair

The first Board Member Spotlight will be our Board Chair Cathy Weik!

Name: Cathy Weik

Occupation: Sr. VP Administration/Compliance Officer for Stratis Health

How long have you been on the board for MNCHWA?

I am a founding board member, our first meeting was held on May 16, 2012.

What do you enjoy about being on the board?

I am energized by the passion of CHWs and those that hire them to make a difference in the lives of others by reaching into the community and doing what it takes to meet their needs.

Why do you believe CHWs are integral to health equity?

Because they represent the communities they serve, they understand the needs of their patients and their families.  They offer more than just medical care – they offer advice, guidance, and hope.

What are your hopes for the Alliance or CHW field in the next few years?

I want to see CHWs as employees in a variety of settings, not just health care.  I want employers to realize the value of a CHW and I want our CHWs to earn a living wage with benefits.

Thank you Cathy for your consistent dedication and the leadership you give to the Alliance!
